How Often Should You Pump a Septic Tank? Signs It's Time

A septic system works quietly until it doesn't. Pumping on schedule is cheap insurance against a backup in the house or a failed drainfield.

The general schedule

The U.S. EPA says most household septic tanks should be pumped every 3 to 5 years and the system inspected about every 3 years. Your schedule depends on:

  • Household size: more people, more wastewater
  • Tank size
  • Water use: laundry, long showers, guests
  • Garbage disposal use: it adds solids fast

Warning signs your tank is due

  • Slow drains throughout the house
  • Gurgling in pipes or toilets
  • Sewage odors inside or near the tank
  • Wet, spongy or unusually green grass over the drainfield
  • Water or sewage backing up into tubs, showers or floor drains

If you see a backup, cut water use right away and call to have the tank pumped.

Before a remodel, addition or sale

  • Adding a bathroom or bedroom? More fixtures and more people put more load on the system. Pump and inspect before the project.
  • Buying or selling? Records of recent pumping help the sale and protect the buyer.
  • Heavy equipment on site? Keep dumpsters, trucks and material deliveries off the tank and drainfield. The weight can crack lids and crush lines. Mark the area before delivery day.

Habits that extend the time between pumpings

  • Spread laundry across the week instead of one big day.
  • Fix leaking toilets and faucets.
  • Keep grease, wipes, paper towels and chemicals out of the drains.
  • Use the garbage disposal sparingly.
