Concrete, Brick and Dirt: How to Haul Heavy Debris
Heavy debris hits a container's weight limit long before it fills the box. Here's how to size, load and separate concrete, brick and dirt.
Driveway tear-outs, patio removals, foundation work and grading all produce the same problem: debris that's small in volume and huge in weight.
Why heavy debris needs a smaller container
Every container and truck has a weight limit. A 30-yard filled with concrete would weigh far more than any truck can legally carry. That's why heavy material goes in a 10-yard roll-off: fill it and you're still within a safe, legal load.
Heavy materials include:
- Concrete and asphalt
- Brick, block and stone
- Dirt, clay, sand and gravel
- Tile and mortar in bulk
Keep it clean
A clean load is one material, without trash mixed in. Clean concrete, clean dirt and clean brick are easier to dispose of than a mixed pile. On a demo job:
- Break out the slab first and load it on its own.
- Haul it.
- Bring in a separate container for the framing, drywall and junk.
Loading tips
- Load evenly across the floor of the container. Don't pile everything at one end.
- Break large slabs into manageable pieces so they lie flat.
- Don't fill above the top rail. With heavy material you'll often hit the weight limit well before the walls.
- Skip the water. Wet dirt weighs more than dry dirt. Cover the pile if rain is coming.
Tell us what's going in
When you book, say what the material is and roughly how much: "a 20 x 20 driveway, 4 inches thick" or "a pile of dirt from digging a pool." We'll size the container and plan the number of loads before anything is scheduled.
For excavation and site work
Large grading and site-prep jobs often take several loads. Ask about scheduled swaps and contractor pricing so the excavator never sits waiting on a container.

Frequently asked questions
What size dumpster for concrete?
A 10-yard roll-off. Concrete is heavy, so a small container keeps the load within its weight limit.
Can I mix concrete and trash in the same dumpster?
It's better not to. A clean load of one material is easier to dispose of than a mixed load.
Does wet dirt weigh more?
Yes. Water adds a lot of weight, so cover dirt piles before rain.
